Let Them Eat Cake

Although the role of those elected to positions of authority and leadership within our government is to serve the people, it seems as if they have forgotten that role.

In fact, the idea of serving the public interest has given way to self-interest. This has created an entire class of people who have taken a position of service and positioned themselves for wealth and power.

Meanwhile those they have sworn to represent and serve suffer through policies and decisions made that do not directly affect the ones making them. As recent history unfolds, the cry from past of “let them eat cake” is echoing throughout the world as the people are treated as second class citizens while the politicians treat themselves as if they are aristocracy.

The evidence of this is easy to see as elected officials enrich themselves while their constituents suffer through high energy cost, massive inflation, and stagnant wages. All the while those elected to serve the people, insulate themselves from the results of the policies they implement and the decisions they make.

The fascinating thing about history is “there is nothing new under the sun” and the result of a similar mindset from the past seems to have been forgotten.

Those in power when the phrase “let them eat cake” was made famous, literally lost their heads as the people grew weary of those who saw themselves as more important than those they were privileged to serve.

The response to “let them eat cake” if you recall was, “off with their heads”. Along with that cry was a revolution that removed those in power in a gruesome and violent way.

Will it be any different this time?

I am not sure. But I do know the willingness of people to be disrespected and brutalized by those in power has its limits, and those limits can be reached all at once, and without warning.

Please understand, I am not advocating for violence or the removal of those in power. I am however cautioning all of us to be aware of history and change direction before that same history repeats itself.

The demeaning phrase, “let them eat cake” and the attitude of those who currently espouse to this view, needs to change to “let’s eat cake together” before someone loses their head!

Proverbs 15:1-3, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools pour out folly. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.
