Who Do They See?

As I wrestle with my personal views, opinions, and biases, I have become more aware that those in my sphere of influence are watching and listening to what I do and say.

This has led me to ask, “Who do they see” when I express my views and opinions?

As a Christ Follower, I believe it is essential to ask this question. Jesus told us people would know Him based on what they see in us, so it is crucial for me to be aware of how others perceive me.

The idea that someone’s impression of God could be affected by what they see in me can be

overwhelming and intimidating. Especially when I may not agree with what they think, do and say. Even as I write this, I am reminded of things I see and hear that I find detestable and contrary to God’s Word.

Perhaps my concern for how I am viewed by someone is simply me being aware of my mortality and the season of life I find myself in. Or just maybe it is the byproduct of a lifetime of reading the Bible and going to church that has led me to realize that if I truly want someone else to know the same Jesus I know, it starts with asking, “who do they see,” when looking at me?

Do they see the grace, mercy, and love I have accepted from Jesus without condition? Or do they see condemnation, hatred, and vitriol? I hope asking these questions is evidence that some of the time I have spent reading and listening to God’s Word has stuck.

I find it interesting that Jesus lived in a time of tremendous religious and secular fervor, not unlike today. What made Jesus different was He did not succumb to either. Instead, He lived His life in a way others could see and emulate. A life of dedication to His mission, devotion to His Father, and love for those around Him,

His life not only marked the world then but also our world today.

So, what about me and you? If we are believers in Jesus, “who do they see?” Do they see someone dedicated to the Great Commission to reach people for Jesus? Do they see someone devoted to our God? Finally, do they see us loving those around us?

The way we answer these questions only matters if they matter to us.

The real problem is that most of us who call ourselves Christ Followers are more consumed with today's social, cultural, and political issues than whether someone can see Jesus in us.

Sadly, this may be precisely what they see when we say we know Him!

John 13:34-35, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
